The first session with Nimly Sparkleshine took place in the Whispering Woods, a place that had not yet been defined. The nearest town was Everlund, which does not appear on all Forgotten Realms maps; if you don’t see it, it is south of Silverymoon, where the road crosses the River Rauvin. Once my first player and others after began to explore the town, I began to see the need for a map. A theater-of-the-mind approach can work well for some things, but not this.
So began my first attempt at mapping Everlund, using the image on the Forgotten Realms Wiki as a template and an Excel spreadsheet as a canvas. I needed a map I could easily modify as I added key locations to the town. This map provided a sense of how far apart buildings were and what lay between them, giving a much clearer picture of the town’s layout, which helped to streamline play sessions.
