Gemcrafting in our campaign
The game’s previous editions have been an ebb and flow of specificity on what the core rules had to say regarding crafting, which is a mighty quick sentence to breeze through the last fifty years of Dungeons & Dragons. In 5e, crafting professions exist in an abstract way through tool proficiencies and downtime activities, though nothing is specific in how a greater healing potion might be made or what sort of time it takes to craft a longsword. Once that blacksmith has made a longsword, who’s to say what is required timewise to bump the item up to a Longsword +1? We are, that’s who. Through a series of trial-and-error, we produced and tore apart proposed crafting guidelines; in a crucible they cooked, until they were ready for consumption. These are our current crafting professions, listed in no particular order:
Rune Crafting
Masonry
Gemcrafting
Enchanting
Carpentry
Blacksmithing
Angling
Wood Carving
Alchemy
Cooking
Herbalism
Let’s focus on Gemcrafting for most of the rest of this discussion.
